London as a Base
One of the great advantages of staying in London is the excellent rail connections to some of England's finest destinations. All of these day trips are under two hours by train, making them perfect for visitors who want to see more of the country without changing hotels.
1. Brighton (1 hour)
The UK's favourite seaside city offers the Royal Pavilion, quirky shops in The Lanes, and a lively seafront. Trains depart from London Victoria every few minutes.
2. Canterbury (55 minutes)
England's most famous cathedral city, with medieval streets, ancient ruins, and literary history. High-speed trains from St Pancras are the fastest option.
3. Windsor (30 minutes)
Home to the world's oldest occupied castle, the Queen's weekend residence. The town itself is charming, and Eton College is just across the bridge.
4. Bath (1 hour 25 minutes)
Roman baths, Georgian architecture, and some of England's best restaurants. A full day barely scratches the surface of this UNESCO World Heritage City.
5. Cambridge (50 minutes)
Punt along the River Cam past the famous college backs, visit the Fitzwilliam Museum, and explore one of the world's greatest university cities.
6. Salisbury and Stonehenge (1 hour 30 minutes)
Salisbury has a magnificent cathedral housing an original Magna Carta. Regular buses connect to Stonehenge, 13 kilometres to the north.
7. Rye (1 hour)
A perfectly preserved medieval town on the Sussex coast with cobbled streets, timber-framed houses, and the atmospheric Mermaid Inn.
8. Whitstable (1 hour 15 minutes)
A charming coastal town famous for its oysters, colourful beach huts, and independent shops. The seafood restaurants are outstanding.
9. Margate (1 hour 20 minutes)
A revitalised seaside town with the Turner Contemporary gallery, a beautiful sandy beach, and a growing creative scene in the Old Town.
10. Winchester (1 hour)
The ancient capital of England, with a spectacular cathedral, the Great Hall (home of the legendary Round Table), and beautiful water meadows for walking.
