Choosing the Right Airport
The UK has numerous international airports, and choosing the right one can save you time and money. Your choice depends on where you want to visit, which airlines serve your route, and how you plan to travel once you arrive.
London Airports
Heathrow (LHR)
The UK's largest airport and the main hub for long-haul flights. Excellent transport links to central London via the Elizabeth Line, Piccadilly Line, and Heathrow Express. Best for visitors whose primary destination is London.
Gatwick (LGW)
The UK's second busiest airport, located south of London. Strong on European and short-haul routes. The Gatwick Express reaches London Victoria in 30 minutes. Best for visitors heading to southern England or Sussex.
Stansted (STN)
A major budget airline hub northeast of London. The Stansted Express reaches Liverpool Street in 47 minutes. Best for budget-conscious travellers, especially from European destinations.
Luton (LTN)
Another budget airline hub, north of London. Recently improved rail links reach St Pancras in under 30 minutes. Best for those on a budget heading to London or the Midlands.
Regional Airports
Manchester (MAN)
The largest airport outside London with extensive international routes. Ideal for visiting northern England, the Lake District, or Wales. The airport has its own rail station with direct services across the region.
Edinburgh (EDI)
Scotland's busiest airport with good European and some transatlantic connections. The tram runs directly to the city centre in 30 minutes.
Birmingham (BHX)
Central England's main airport, well positioned for the Midlands, Stratford-upon-Avon, and the Cotswolds. Connected by rail to Birmingham city centre in 10 minutes.
Tips for Choosing
- Match your airport to your destination — do not always default to Heathrow
- Regional airports often mean shorter queues and faster processing
- Compare total journey time including ground transport, not just flight time
- Budget airlines often use secondary airports — check before booking
