UK Emergency Numbers and Healthcare for Visitors

UK Emergency Numbers and Healthcare for Visitors

Emergency Number: 999

In any life-threatening emergency in the UK, dial 999 (or 112, which also works). This connects you to police, fire, ambulance, or coastguard services. Calls are free from any phone, including mobiles without credit. Only use 999 for genuine emergencies where there is an immediate risk to life.

Non-Emergency Help: 111

For urgent medical advice that is not a life-threatening emergency, call NHS 111. This free service is available 24 hours a day and can help with symptoms you are unsure about, direct you to the right service, or arrange an out-of-hours doctor appointment.

Other Important Numbers

  • 101: Non-emergency police (theft reports, minor incidents)
  • 116 123: Samaritans — emotional support, available 24/7
  • Your embassy: Save your country's embassy or consulate number in your phone

How Healthcare Works for Visitors

The NHS provides healthcare to UK residents, mostly free at the point of use. As a visitor, your access depends on the type of care:

  • Emergency treatment: A&E (Accident and Emergency) departments will treat anyone in a genuine emergency, but you may be charged afterwards
  • GP services: Generally not available to visitors unless registered
  • Pharmacies: Can provide advice and sell over-the-counter medication without a prescription
  • Walk-in centres: Some areas have urgent care centres that treat minor injuries and illnesses

Travel Insurance Is Essential

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance for any visit to the UK. NHS treatment for visitors can be expensive, and insurance also covers trip cancellation, lost luggage, and other incidents. Check that your policy covers the UK specifically and any activities you plan to do.

Pharmacies

UK pharmacies (chemists) are found on most high streets. Boots and Superdrug are the largest chains. Pharmacists can advise on minor ailments and sell medications that might require a prescription in your home country. Many pharmacies are open late and on weekends.

Stay Prepared

Apply for your UK ETA, arrange travel insurance, and save these numbers in your phone before travelling to the UK.
