UK ETA for EU Citizens: Post-Brexit Travel to Britain Explained

What Changed After Brexit?

Before Brexit, EU citizens could travel freely to the UK using their national ID card or passport. That changed when the UK left the European Union. EU nationals now need a valid passport and an Electronic Travel Authorisation to visit the UK for short stays.

Which EU Countries Are Affected?

All 27 EU member states are included in the UK ETA scheme. This also applies to citizens of EEA countries (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) and Switzerland. The rules are the same regardless of which EU country you are from.

Key Changes for EU Travellers

  • Passport required: National ID cards are no longer accepted for travel to the UK
  • ETA required: Must be obtained before travel
  • Six-month limit: Visits are now capped at six months instead of the previous unlimited stays
  • No right to work: EU citizens can no longer work in the UK without a visa
  • Healthcare: The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is no longer valid in the UK — you need travel insurance

What Stayed the Same

Despite the changes, travelling to the UK remains straightforward for EU citizens. The ETA application is quick and affordable, processing typically takes under 72 hours, and you can still visit for up to six months for tourism or business.

Eurostar and Channel Tunnel

EU citizens travelling to the UK by Eurostar or through the Channel Tunnel need an ETA just like air travellers. Border checks are carried out before you board in Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, or at the Eurotunnel terminal in Calais.

Tips for EU Travellers

  1. Renew your passport if it expires soon — you can no longer use an ID card
  2. Apply for your ETA at least a week before travel
  3. Get travel insurance — your EHIC will not cover you
  4. Check UK customs allowances, which differ from EU rules
  5. The UK still uses pounds sterling, not euros
