The Pub in British Life
The pub (short for public house) has been central to British social life for centuries. It is a place to eat, drink, socialise, watch sport, and spend time with friends and family. For visitors, experiencing a traditional British pub is one of the most authentic things you can do in the UK.
Pub Etiquette
Ordering
In most traditional pubs, you order and pay at the bar. There is no table service unless the pub specifically offers it (many now do for food). When waiting at the bar, there is no formal queue, but good bartenders know who arrived first. Do not wave money or shout to get attention — simply make eye contact and wait.
Rounds
If you are drinking with British people, you will likely be part of a round system. One person buys drinks for the entire group, then the next person buys the next round. It is considered poor form not to buy your round when it is your turn.
Tipping
Tipping is not expected at the bar, though you might say "and one for yourself" to offer the bartender a drink. For table service or pub meals, a small tip is appreciated but not obligatory.
What to Drink
- Cask ale: The quintessential British pub drink, served at cellar temperature (not ice cold)
- Lager: Served cold, the most popular beer choice overall
- Cider: Very popular, especially in the West Country (Somerset, Herefordshire)
- Gin and tonic: The UK is experiencing a gin renaissance with hundreds of craft options
- Soft drinks: All pubs serve soft drinks and many now offer excellent non-alcoholic beers
Pub Food
Pub food has improved enormously in recent decades. Many pubs now serve restaurant-quality meals. Classic dishes to try include fish and chips, pie and mash, a ploughman's lunch (cheese, bread, pickle), and the Sunday roast — a quintessentially British tradition.
Types of Pubs
- Traditional locals: Community pubs with regular customers and a cosy atmosphere
- Gastro pubs: Pubs focused on high-quality food
- Country pubs: Rural pubs often with gardens and fireplaces
- Historic pubs: Some UK pubs date back hundreds of years
