York: A Guide to England's Best-Preserved Medieval City

Why York Is Special

York is arguably the best-preserved medieval city in England. Founded by the Romans in 71 AD, it has been shaped by Vikings, Normans, and medieval merchants. Today, the city offers an extraordinary concentration of history within its ancient walls, alongside excellent shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions.

Getting There

York is just under two hours from London King's Cross by train on the East Coast Main Line. It is also well connected to Edinburgh (2.5 hours), Manchester (1.5 hours), and Leeds (25 minutes). The train station is a short walk from the city centre.

Must-See Attractions

York Minster

One of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe. The medieval stained glass windows are breathtaking, particularly the Great East Window. Climb the tower for panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside.

The Shambles

This narrow medieval street with overhanging timber-framed buildings dates back to the fourteenth century. Often called the most picturesque street in Britain, it is lined with independent shops, tea rooms, and sweet shops.

York City Walls

Walk the almost complete circuit of medieval walls that encircle the old city. The three-kilometre walk takes about an hour and offers unique elevated views of the city and the Minster.

Jorvik Viking Centre

Built on the site of a major archaeological discovery, this museum brings Viking-age York to life with reconstructed streets, sounds, and even smells. It is particularly popular with families.

Food and Drink

York has an excellent food scene. Do not miss Betty's Tea Rooms for a traditional afternoon tea experience, and explore the growing number of independent restaurants around Fossgate. York is also home to several craft breweries and historic pubs.

Day Trips from York

  • Castle Howard — a grand stately home 30 minutes from the city
  • The Yorkshire Dales — stunning countryside for walking
  • Whitby — a coastal town famous for its abbey and fish and chips

Plan Your Trip

York deserves at least two full days to explore properly. Get your UK ETA sorted and discover this remarkable city.
