Common UK ETA Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Getting Your Application Right

The UK ETA application is designed to be simple, but even small mistakes can lead to delays, additional verification, or rejection. Based on thousands of applications we have processed, here are the most frequent errors and how to avoid them.

1. Name Does Not Match Passport

This is the single most common mistake. Your name on the ETA application must match your passport exactly โ€” character for character. Common issues include:

  • Using a nickname or shortened name instead of your full legal name
  • Omitting a middle name that appears in your passport
  • Swapping the order of given name and family name
  • Accidental typos or extra spaces

How to avoid it: Copy your name directly from the machine-readable zone at the bottom of your passport's photo page.

2. Incorrect Passport Number

Passport numbers often contain characters that look similar โ€” the letter O and the number 0, or the letter I and the number 1. Entering the wrong character will cause a mismatch when your ETA is verified at the border.

How to avoid it: Double-check each character of your passport number. Most modern passports use only numbers in the passport number field, but confirm this with your specific document.

3. Passport Expiring Too Soon

Your passport should have at least six months of validity remaining from your planned date of entry into the UK. If your passport expires sooner, your application may be flagged or refused.

How to avoid it: Check your passport expiry date before applying. If it expires within eight months, consider renewing it first and then applying for the ETA with your new passport details.

4. Applying with the Wrong Passport

If you hold dual nationality or have recently renewed your passport, make sure you apply using the passport you will actually travel with. An ETA is linked to a specific passport number and cannot be transferred.

How to avoid it: Decide which passport you will use for your UK trip before starting the application. If you get a new passport after your ETA is approved, you will need to apply again.

5. Incorrect Date of Birth

Date format differences cause confusion. Many countries use DD/MM/YYYY while others use MM/DD/YYYY. Entering 03/07/1990 could mean 3 July or 7 March depending on the format.

How to avoid it: Pay attention to the format labels on the form. Our application uses clear date picker fields to prevent confusion.

6. Leaving the Application Incomplete

Some applicants start their application but do not complete it โ€” perhaps because they were interrupted or unsure about a question. An incomplete application cannot be processed.

How to avoid it: TravelReady24 automatically saves your progress, so you can return and complete your application later without losing any data.

7. Not Applying Early Enough

While ETA processing can be fast, applying at the last minute adds unnecessary stress. If any issue arises with your application, there may not be enough time to resolve it before your flight.

How to avoid it: Apply at least one week before your departure. This gives you plenty of time for standard processing and room to address any unexpected issues.
