Your Options from Heathrow
London Heathrow is the UK's busiest airport and sits roughly 24 kilometres west of central London. The good news is that there are multiple transport options to suit every budget and schedule. Here is a breakdown of each one.
Elizabeth Line (Crossrail)
The Elizabeth Line is the newest and arguably the best-value option. It connects Heathrow directly to Paddington, Liverpool Street, and beyond. The journey to Paddington takes around 28 minutes and costs significantly less than the Heathrow Express. Trains run every few minutes during peak hours.
Best for: Budget-conscious travellers who want a direct rail link without paying premium prices.
Heathrow Express
The fastest train option, reaching Paddington in just 15 minutes. However, it comes at a premium price. Book online in advance for savings, as walk-up fares are considerably more expensive.
Best for: Business travellers and anyone in a hurry who values speed over cost.
London Underground (Piccadilly Line)
The cheapest rail option. The Piccadilly Line runs from all Heathrow terminals to central London stations including King's Cross, Piccadilly Circus, and South Kensington. The journey takes 50-60 minutes but costs a fraction of other options.
Best for: Budget travellers with lighter luggage and no rush.
National Express Coach
Coaches run from Heathrow to Victoria Coach Station and other London destinations. Journey times vary with traffic (60-90 minutes) but fares are very competitive, especially if booked in advance.
Best for: Travellers heading to areas south of the Thames or on the tightest budget.
Taxi and Private Hire
Black cabs are available from ranks outside every terminal. The metered fare to central London typically ranges from 50 to 100 GBP depending on traffic and destination. Pre-booked minicabs and ride-hailing services can be cheaper but must be booked in advance.
Best for: Groups of 3-4 sharing the cost, late-night arrivals, or those with heavy luggage.
Tips for a Smooth Journey
- Get an Oyster card or use contactless payment for the Tube and Elizabeth Line
- Avoid travelling during rush hour (7:30-9:30am, 5-7pm) if possible
- Check Transport for London for any service disruptions before you travel
