Scottish Highlands Road Trip: Routes, Stops, and Practical Tips

Why Drive the Scottish Highlands?

The Scottish Highlands are best experienced by road. The landscape is vast, sparsely populated, and endlessly dramatic โ€” rugged mountains, deep lochs, and single-track roads that wind through some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe. A road trip lets you stop wherever the view demands it.

The North Coast 500

Scotland's answer to Route 66, the North Coast 500 (NC500) is a 516-mile loop starting and ending in Inverness. It circles the northern tip of Scotland and takes in coastline, castles, and highland wilderness.

Key Stops on the NC500

  • Applecross Peninsula: The Bealach na Ba pass is one of the UK's most dramatic mountain roads
  • Durness: Remote beaches and Smoo Cave on the north coast
  • John o'Groats: The most northerly point of mainland Britain
  • Dunrobin Castle: A fairy-tale castle on the east coast

Allow at least five days for the full route, though a week gives you time to explore properly.

The Isle of Skye

Reached by bridge from the mainland, Skye is a must-visit. The Quiraing, Old Man of Storr, and Fairy Pools are among Scotland's most iconic landscapes. The island is small but the single-track roads mean driving takes longer than you expect.

Glen Coe

One of Scotland's most atmospheric valleys. The A82 through Glen Coe is one of the finest driving roads in the UK, with towering mountains on either side. Stop at the viewpoints and, if time allows, hike into the Lost Valley.

Practical Tips

  • Hire a car in Edinburgh or Inverness. Automatic gearboxes are available but less common โ€” request one when booking
  • Drive on the left. On single-track roads, pull into passing places to let oncoming traffic through
  • Fuel up regularly. Petrol stations are sparse in the Highlands. Do not let your tank drop below a quarter
  • Book accommodation early. Highland hotels and B&Bs fill up quickly in summer
  • Pack for all weather. Scottish weather can change dramatically within hours

Best Time to Visit

May to September offers the longest days and best weather. July and August are peak season with the most tourists. May and September are quieter with equally beautiful scenery. Winter driving is not recommended for visitors unfamiliar with mountain roads.
