Stonehenge and the English Countryside: A Day Trip Guide

Why Visit Stonehenge?

Stonehenge is one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in the world. Built around 5,000 years ago on Salisbury Plain, these massive standing stones continue to mystify archaeologists and visitors alike. No trip to the UK is complete without seeing them.

Getting There

From London

  • By car: About two hours via the M3 and A303. Parking is available at the visitor centre
  • By train: Take a train to Salisbury (90 minutes from London Waterloo), then a Stonehenge shuttle bus (30 minutes)
  • Organised tours: Many companies offer day trips from London, often combined with Bath or Windsor Castle

What to Expect

The modern visitor experience is well designed. You arrive at the visitor centre, which includes a museum with artefacts and interactive displays explaining the monument's history. A shuttle bus takes you to the stones themselves.

You walk around the stones on a roped path โ€” general visitors cannot walk among the stones. However, special access tours at sunrise and sunset allow closer access (book well in advance).

Nearby Attractions

Salisbury

The nearby cathedral city of Salisbury is worth a visit in its own right. Salisbury Cathedral has the tallest spire in Britain and houses one of only four surviving copies of the Magna Carta.

Avebury

Thirty minutes north of Stonehenge, Avebury is a larger (though less famous) stone circle that you can walk among freely. The village of Avebury sits within the circle itself, and the whole area is a World Heritage Site.

Old Sarum

The remains of the original settlement of Salisbury, with Iron Age, Roman, and medieval ruins on a hilltop with panoramic views.

Tips for Your Visit

  1. Book tickets online in advance โ€” walk-up tickets sell out during peak periods
  2. Visit early morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds and better light for photos
  3. Bring layers and a waterproof โ€” Salisbury Plain is exposed and windy
  4. Allow 2-3 hours for the visitor centre, museum, and stone circle
  5. Combine with Salisbury or Bath to make a full day trip

Plan Your Stonehenge Day

Stonehenge is an unmissable part of the UK experience. Ensure your UK ETA is ready and add this ancient wonder to your itinerary.
