Tipping in the UK: A Complete Etiquette Guide for Visitors

Is Tipping Expected in the UK?

Tipping in the UK is appreciated but not as obligatory as in some other countries. Service workers in the UK are paid at least the national minimum wage, so tips are a bonus rather than a necessity. That said, there are situations where tipping is customary and expected.

Restaurants and Cafes

A tip of 10-12.5% is standard for table service at restaurants. Many restaurants now add an optional service charge to the bill. Check your bill carefully:

  • If a service charge is included, you do not need to tip extra
  • If no service charge is included, leave 10-12.5% if you were happy with the service
  • You can ask for the service charge to be removed if the service was poor
  • For counter service (fast food, coffee shops), tipping is not expected though tip jars are common

Pubs and Bars

Tipping at the bar is not customary in British pubs. If you want to show appreciation, you can offer to buy the bartender a drink by saying "and one for yourself". This is a traditional gesture but certainly not expected.

Taxis

Rounding up the fare to the nearest pound is common. For a 17.40 GBP fare, you might pay 18 or 19 GBP. Tipping 10% is generous and appreciated. For ride-hailing apps, you can tip through the app.

Hotels

  • Porters: 1-2 GBP per bag is a kind gesture
  • Housekeeping: Not widely expected, but 1-2 GBP per night left in the room is appreciated
  • Concierge: Tip if they go above and beyond โ€” 5-10 GBP for exceptional help

Hairdressers and Personal Services

A tip of 10% or rounding up is customary for haircuts and beauty treatments.

Tour Guides

For free walking tours, a tip of 5-10 GBP per person is expected โ€” this is how the guides earn their living. For paid tours, a small tip is appreciated but not required.

When Not to Tip

  • Self-service restaurants and takeaways
  • Shops and retail stores
  • Public transport
  • When a service charge is already on the bill

The Golden Rule

In the UK, tipping is a way to show appreciation for good service, not an obligation. No one will be offended if you do not tip, and no one will chase you for it. Tip when you feel the service deserves it.
