UK ETA Validity: How Long Does It Last and Can You Use It Multiple Times?

How Long Is a UK ETA Valid?

A UK ETA is valid for two years from the date of issue, or until your passport expires โ€” whichever comes first. During this period, you can use it for multiple visits to the UK without reapplying.

Multiple Entry: Yes, You Can Visit More Than Once

The UK ETA is a multiple-entry authorisation. This means you can enter and leave the UK as many times as you want during the validity period. Each visit can last up to six months, though immigration officers may question the purpose of very frequent or very long stays.

When Does It Expire?

Your ETA expires on the earliest of these dates:

  • Two years from issue: The standard validity period
  • Passport expiry: If your passport expires before the two-year mark, your ETA expires with it
  • Cancellation: In rare cases, an ETA may be cancelled if circumstances change

What Happens If My Passport Expires?

Your ETA is linked to your specific passport. If you renew your passport, you will need to apply for a new ETA linked to your new passport, even if your previous ETA has not reached its two-year expiry. The old ETA cannot be transferred.

Do I Need to Reapply for Each Trip?

No. As long as your ETA is still valid and linked to the passport you are travelling with, you do not need to reapply for each visit. Simply travel with the same passport used in your ETA application.

How to Check If Your ETA Is Still Valid

Keep a record of your ETA approval date and your passport expiry date. If you are unsure whether your ETA is still active, you can check the status using your reference number or contact the processing team.

When to Apply for a New ETA

You need a new ETA if:

  1. Your previous ETA has passed the two-year mark
  2. You have renewed your passport since your last application
  3. Your personal details (name, nationality) have changed

Plan Ahead

If you travel to the UK regularly, keep track of your ETA and passport expiry dates. Apply for a new ETA through TravelReady24 when needed, and you will always be ready to travel.
