UK Travel Checklist for GCC Nationals

Travelling from the Gulf to the UK

The United Kingdom is one of the most popular destinations for GCC nationals, whether for shopping, education, medical tourism, business, or simply escaping the summer heat. With direct flights from every Gulf capital to multiple UK cities, the journey is convenient โ€” but preparation is key.

Documents You Need

  • Valid passport: Must have at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry
  • UK ETA: Required for all GCC nationals โ€” apply online before travel
  • Hotel confirmation: Proof of accommodation for your stay
  • Return or onward ticket: Evidence that you plan to leave the UK
  • Travel insurance: Not mandatory but strongly recommended, especially for medical coverage

Currency and Payments

The UK uses the British Pound Sterling (GBP). Currency exchange is available at airports and city centres, but rates are often better at local banks or ATMs. Contactless payment via credit card or smartphone is the most common payment method โ€” even small shops and market stalls usually accept cards.

Weather and What to Pack

UK weather is very different from the Gulf. Even in summer, temperatures rarely exceed 25ยฐC, and rain can arrive without warning any time of year. Essential packing items include:

  • A waterproof jacket or umbrella โ€” essential all year round
  • Layered clothing โ€” mornings can be cool even when afternoons are warm
  • Comfortable walking shoes โ€” most UK sightseeing involves significant walking
  • Warm coat, scarf, and gloves if visiting between October and March

Getting Around

London has an excellent public transport network. The Tube (underground railway), buses, and overground trains cover the entire city. Use a contactless bank card or get an Oyster card for discounted fares. For travel outside London, the national rail network connects major cities, or you can rent a car โ€” but remember to drive on the left.

Halal Food and Prayer Facilities

London, Birmingham, Manchester, and other major UK cities have thriving Muslim communities with excellent halal dining options. Mosques and prayer rooms are widely available, and many shopping centres have dedicated prayer spaces. Apps and websites can help you locate the nearest halal restaurants and prayer facilities.

Shopping

The UK is renowned for shopping, from luxury brands on Bond Street and Knightsbridge to outlet villages like Bicester Village. Many stores offer tax-free shopping for international visitors โ€” ask about VAT refund schemes at participating retailers.

Emergency Contacts

  • Emergency services: Dial 999 for police, fire, or ambulance
  • Non-emergency police: Dial 101
  • NHS health advice: Dial 111
