The British Weather Reputation
The UK's weather has a worldwide reputation for being grey and rainy. While there is some truth to this, the reality is more nuanced. British weather is best described as changeable — you can experience sunshine, rain, wind, and cloud all in the same day. The key to enjoying your trip is being prepared.
Spring (March - May)
Temperatures range from 8-15°C. Days are getting longer and gardens come alive.
What to Pack
- Light layers — a jumper or fleece you can add or remove
- A waterproof jacket (not just an umbrella — British rain is often horizontal)
- Comfortable walking shoes that are water-resistant
- A light scarf for cooler mornings
- Sunglasses — spring sunshine can be surprisingly bright
Summer (June - August)
Temperatures range from 15-25°C, occasionally reaching 30°C. The longest days with daylight until 9-10pm.
What to Pack
- Light clothing — t-shirts, shorts, and summer dresses
- A light rain jacket (yes, even in summer)
- Sun cream — the British sun can burn even on cloudy days
- Comfortable sandals and a pair of closed shoes
- A cardigan or light jacket for cooler evenings
Autumn (September - November)
Temperatures range from 5-15°C. Beautiful foliage but increasingly wet and windy.
What to Pack
- Warm layers — thermals for later in the season
- A warm waterproof coat
- Sturdy waterproof shoes or boots
- An umbrella (compact, windproof)
- A warm hat and gloves for November
Winter (December - February)
Temperatures range from 0-8°C. Short days (dark by 4pm) and occasional frost or snow.
What to Pack
- A warm winter coat — insulated and waterproof is ideal
- Thermal base layers
- A warm hat, scarf, and gloves
- Waterproof boots with good grip
- Warm socks (more than you think you need)
Universal Packing Tips
- Layer everything. Buildings in the UK are well heated, so you will want to remove layers indoors
- Waterproofing is essential. A good waterproof jacket is more useful than an umbrella in wind
- Pack a power adapter. The UK uses Type G plugs (three rectangular pins)
- Bring comfortable shoes. You will walk more than you expect, especially in London
- Check the forecast for your specific dates, but always be prepared for rain regardless of what it says
Be Weather-Ready
Pack smart and the British weather becomes part of the adventure rather than a hindrance. Get your UK ETA and your waterproof jacket ready — you are all set.
