UK Customs and Entry Rules: What You Can and Cannot Bring Into the Country

UK Customs: The Basics

After clearing immigration with your passport and approved ETA, you will pass through UK customs. Most travellers pass through without any issues, but knowing the rules in advance helps you avoid delays, fines, or having items confiscated.

What You Can Bring Duty-Free

If you are arriving from outside the UK, you can bring the following without paying duty or tax:

  • Tobacco: 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco
  • Alcohol: 4 litres of still wine, plus 1 litre of spirits over 22% ABV or 2 litres of sparkling wine
  • Other goods: Up to 390 GBP in value (including gifts and souvenirs)

These allowances are per person and apply to adults only. You cannot combine allowances across family members.

Restricted Items

Some items require a licence, permit, or advance declaration to bring into the UK:

  • Prescription medicines: Carry them in their original packaging with a doctor's letter. Controlled drugs may need a licence
  • Cash over 10,000 GBP: You must declare cash or equivalent (traveller's cheques, banker's drafts) exceeding this amount
  • Firearms and weapons: Strict licensing requirements apply, including certain types of knives
  • Plants and seeds: Many require phytosanitary certificates

Prohibited Items

The following items are banned and will be confiscated. Attempting to bring them in could result in prosecution:

  • Illegal drugs
  • Offensive weapons (flick knives, butterfly knives, knuckle dusters)
  • Self-defence sprays (pepper spray, mace)
  • Counterfeit goods
  • Certain types of food products โ€” particularly meat and dairy from non-EU countries

Food Rules After Brexit

Since the UK left the EU, food import rules have changed significantly. You cannot bring meat, dairy products, or potatoes from most countries. This includes common items like:

  • Cheese, butter, yoghurt
  • Fresh or cured meats (including vacuum-packed)
  • Milk or cream

Non-animal products like bread, fruit, vegetables, and packaged snacks are generally fine, but check for specific restrictions on items from your home country.

Declaring Goods

If you have goods to declare (exceeding duty-free allowances or restricted items), use the Red Channel at customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the Green Channel. Making a false declaration is a criminal offence and can result in penalties.

Tips for a Smooth Customs Experience

  1. Pack restricted items (medicines, large amounts of cash) in your carry-on for easy access
  2. Keep receipts for expensive items you purchased abroad
  3. Do not joke about prohibited items โ€” border officers take declarations seriously
  4. If in doubt, declare it. Officers are generally helpful when you are upfront

Prepare for Your Arrival

Getting through customs is the final step of entering the UK. With your UK ETA approved and your bags packed within the rules, you will breeze through and start enjoying your trip.
