Why Cornwall?
Cornwall, at the far southwestern tip of England, is famous for its spectacular coastline, sandy beaches, fishing harbours, and artistic heritage. With over 400 miles of coast, it offers everything from family-friendly sandy bays to world-class surfing beaches and dramatic clifftop walks.
Getting There
The Great Western Railway runs from London Paddington to Penzance (5 hours), stopping at Plymouth, St Austell, and Truro. Cornwall also has a small airport at Newquay with flights from London and other UK cities. Having a car gives you the most flexibility to explore the coast.
Best Beaches
Porthcurno
A stunning white sand beach framed by granite cliffs. The nearby Minack Theatre, an open-air amphitheatre carved into the cliffside, is one of Cornwall's most iconic attractions.
Fistral Beach, Newquay
The UK's most famous surfing beach hosts international competitions and has excellent surf schools for beginners.
Kynance Cove
Often called the most beautiful beach in England, with turquoise water and dramatic serpentine rock formations. Accessible by a short walk down the cliffs.
Coastal Walks
The South West Coast Path runs the entire length of Cornwall's coastline. You do not need to walk it all — here are some highlights:
- Bedruthan Steps: Dramatic sea stacks along the north coast
- Lizard Point: England's most southerly point with wild cliff scenery
- St Ives to Zennor: A stunning clifftop walk passing ancient field systems
Food and Culture
Cornwall is famous for its pasties, fresh seafood, cream teas, and award-winning restaurants. The food scene ranges from harbourside fish and chip shops to Michelin-starred dining. St Ives has been an artists' colony since the 1920s and houses a branch of the Tate Gallery.
Practical Tips
- Cornish weather is changeable — bring layers and a waterproof
- Many beaches have strong currents — swim between the red and yellow flags
