London's West End: Your Guide to Theatre in the Capital

What Is the West End?

London's West End is the heart of British theatre and one of the two most important commercial theatre districts in the English-speaking world, alongside Broadway. Centred around Shaftesbury Avenue and Covent Garden, the district contains around 40 major theatres hosting everything from long-running musicals to cutting-edge new plays.

Types of Shows

Musicals

The West End is famous for its musicals, many of which run for years or even decades. From classic shows to new productions, there is always a wide choice.

Plays

Serious drama, comedy, and experimental theatre all have a strong presence. Many productions feature internationally renowned actors.

Immersive and Alternative Theatre

London's fringe theatre scene is one of the best in the world. Smaller venues across the city offer innovative and experimental productions at lower prices.

How to Get Tickets

  • Official box office: Buy directly from the theatre for the most reliable tickets
  • Day seats: Many theatres release a limited number of discounted tickets each morning
  • TKTS booth: The official discount ticket booth in Leicester Square offers same-day tickets at reduced prices
  • Lottery and rush tickets: Some shows offer digital lotteries for heavily discounted seats

Theatre Etiquette

  1. Arrive at least 15 minutes before curtain up — latecomers may not be admitted until an interval
  2. Silence your phone completely — vibrate mode is not enough
  3. No photography or recording during performances
  4. There is usually a bar in the theatre — you can pre-order interval drinks
  5. Dress code is relaxed — smart casual is fine for most shows

Making an Evening of It

Most West End shows start at 7:30pm. Have an early dinner in nearby Soho, Covent Garden, or Chinatown before the show. After the performance, many restaurants and bars stay open late.
