Stratford-upon-Avon: Exploring Shakespeare's Birthplace

The Home of Shakespeare

Stratford-upon-Avon is one of England's most visited towns, and for good reason. The birthplace of William Shakespeare combines literary heritage with a beautiful riverside setting, excellent theatre, and easy access to the Warwickshire countryside.

Getting There

Direct trains from London Marylebone take about two hours. Stratford is also easy to reach from Birmingham (one hour by train) and makes a natural day trip combined with nearby Warwick Castle or the Cotswolds.

Shakespeare Sites

  • Shakespeare's Birthplace: The house where Shakespeare was born and grew up, now a museum on Henley Street
  • Anne Hathaway's Cottage: A beautiful thatched cottage where Shakespeare's wife grew up, surrounded by an Elizabethan garden
  • Holy Trinity Church: Shakespeare's burial place beside the River Avon
  • New Place: The site of Shakespeare's adult home, now a landscaped garden with an exhibition

The Royal Shakespeare Company

The RSC is one of the world's great theatre companies. Seeing a Shakespeare play performed in his hometown is a memorable experience. The main theatre and the smaller Swan Theatre offer productions year-round. Book tickets in advance for popular shows.

Beyond Shakespeare

Stratford is also a lovely town to explore at a slower pace. Take a boat ride on the River Avon, browse the antique shops, or walk along the canal towpath. The surrounding countryside offers gentle walking through quintessential English farmland.

Nearby Attractions

  • Warwick Castle: A magnificent medieval castle 15 minutes away
  • The Cotswolds: Picture-perfect honey-stone villages starting 30 minutes south
  • Blenheim Palace: The birthplace of Winston Churchill, about an hour's drive
